Kids Can Do: Gunk it UP!

Our Kids Can Do means easy.
And quick. And fun. And inexpensive.

Gunk.  Playdough.  Putty.  Flubber.  Whatever it is, kids LOVE it and mom's can't argue that this activity doubles as a stress-reliever.  Here are a few of my favorite recipes from my daycare days!

Pick Your Concoction:

Rubbery Playdough:  Mix 2 cups baking soda, 1 1/2 cups water, and 1 cup cornstarch.  Mix with a spoon until smooth.  Boil over medium heat until thick.  Spoon onto plate, wax paper or play surface and create!

Silly Putty:  Place 1/2 cup Elmer's glue in a disposal bowl.  Slowly add 1/2 cup of liquid starch to glue and knead with fingers. The more you work with it the better it jells. Add food coloring if you like.
Gunk:  Mix 1 part cornstarch to 1 part water.  Mix and color with food color.  You’ll be amazed how it melts in your fingers and solidifies on the table.  Cleans up easy with water.  Go Science!
Flubber:  You will need 1 1/2 cups glue, 4 tablespoons Borax (laundry detergent aisle) and 4 cups water.  Directions: Mix 2 cups of water and the glue in a bowl.  In a separate bowl, mix together 2 cups water and the Borax.  After it’s dissolved, pour the Borax mixture a little at a time into the glue mixture and stir.  You might not need all of the Borax mixture.  Squish it, poke it, or try sticking a bit of it a the end of a straw and blowing a bubble.  Watch it ooze through your fingers.  Note: Vinegar will take flubber out of clothes and mayonnaise will take it out of hair.  (Good to know?)

Add Accessories:

Silly Creations:  Add different sizes of googly eyes, buttons, straws, pipe cleaners and other household items to your playdough.

Goofy Gadgets: Root through your kitchen cabinets and junk drawers for unique tools - cookie cutters, potato masher, comb, rolling pin, stamps, plastic scissors, plastic forks and spoons, wooden mallet, lids, milk caps, small plastic bowls, golf tees, toy cars, etc.

Have Fun!
