Our ** Top 50 ** Water Saving Tips


Inspired by our interview with Brian Clark Howard (Environmental Editor at National Geographic) on Be Green: Water, here are Vicky and Jen's TOP 50 things you can do at home to conserve water.

How many of these can you do right now to make a difference?

1. No need for the faucet to be on full blast.
2. Save a flush, or two.
3. Use left over drinking water on the plants.
4. Don't fill the bath tub so full.
5. Rinse your dishes in a sink full of clean water.
6. Don't wash out every recyclable.
7. Skip rinsing dishes before loading the dishwasher.
8. Never brush your teeth while you shower.
9. Water your lawn less often, or not at all.
10. Purchase a new toilet with an EPA WaterSense label.
11. Turn off the water when you brush your teeth.
12. Wash full loads of laundry.
13. Run the dishwasher only when it's full.
14. Choose a bath over a shower.
15. Water outdoor plants in the morning.
16. Fix leaky faucets as soon as you spot them.
17. Swap out your dishwasher for a more efficient one.
18. Eat less beef and save 1,800 gallons of water per pound.
19. Purchase wine that is eco-friendly, or drink less of it.
20. Let kids play in tubs or pools instead of with a hose.
21. Go "low flow" with your shower head.
22. Wash your car less.
23. Take shorter showers.
24. Keep the sprinkler on your lawn, not the sidewalk, driveway or street.
25. Find out how much water your washing machine uses.
26. Use mulch to retain water around your landscaping.
27. Avoid using a hose to clean off your sidewalks in the summer - sweep.
28. Teach your kids how to conserve water too.
29. Use your used fish tank water to water the shrubs.
30. Wash your dog outside (in grass) and water your lawn at the same time.
31. Turn off the water while you shave.
32. Reuse your bath towels for as long as possible.
33. Apply soap on your hands then turn off the water while you lather.
34. Buy recycled paper products.
35. Toss tissues in the waste basket instead of flushing them.
36. Don't run the water while washing your face.
37. Keep cold water in the fridge instead of running water to get it cool.
38. Use the garbage disposal less.
39. Use the kiddie pool water for the plants or sprinkle over the lawn.
40. Patch that leaky hose, connector and spigot.
42. Don't let the water run while you clean your vegetables.
43. Plant drought-resistant shrubs, lawns, and plants.
44. Collect water from your roof for your garden.
45. Soak pots and pans instead of letting water run as you scrape them.
46. Bathe younger children together.
47. Check for leaks in your pool pump.
48. Use the same drinking glass all day to reduce dishwashing.
49. Avoid buying summer water toys that use a lot of water.
